PERFECT PITCH
IS...
Ever wonder where perfect pitch comes
from? Is it something we can learn? Or is it a gift only a lucky few
are born with? These are questions debated recently by researchers.
People who possess perfect pitch can
accurately sing any note named without first hearing a nearby pitch.
It has been pointed out by some
researchers that a high level of musical interest and training within a
family may be one reason perfect pitch has been found to run in
families. It has also been acknowledged that although it takes exposure
to music to make the talent evident, if perfect pitch were simply a
matter of diligent musical preparation, why then don't more great
musicians have the skill?
One study revealed that one half of the
subjects with perfect pitch had at least one immediate family member who
also possessed perfect pitch. In addition, almost all of the subjects
knew they had perfect pitch by age 10.
Don't feel bad if you don't have perfect pitch. More common
is relative pitch - the ability to identity a note from its relativity
to another pitch. Relative pitch is thought by some researchers to be
of more practical use to musicians than perfect pitch, while others say
perfect pitch makes music easier to read and to memorize, especially
among singers. |
