Starland Music Center, a dynamic music education center and retail store in Alameda now for 3 decades, has an opening for someone who has business skills and a passion for helping people enjoy a better life through learning and creating music. You are energetic, enthusiastic, great with people of all ages on the phone or in person, preferably have sales or customer service experience, and would thrive in a place where multitasking is often the flavor of the day. You probably play and instrument as a hobby and sincerely believe in the value of music education. And even though you enjoy working in a creative environment with creative people, you are responsible, reliable, organized, comfortable with a computer and enjoy doing things in a professional manner.
The School Administrator has front line responsibility for creating a warm, friendly environment while effectively and successfully satisfying our customer’s needs with our music products. With respect to the school, you will be directly involved in enrolling students, scheduling and working with our excellent group of professional music teachers in insuring that our students, teachers and Starland are all successful. With respect to the retail store you will assist with sales, display and inventory.
School Administration
- assist in student enrollment, scheduling, and other related tasks
- handles incoming telephone calls, mail, and e-mail correspondence, as needed
- routes calls and correspondence to the proper personnel
- facilitate communication among studio personnel
- handle customer complaints and seek appropriate channels to resolve
- prepare correspondence and data entry tasks for registration, attendance, etc.
- ordering and stocking supplies for school and office
- assist with planning, execution and participate in school events (yearly recital, staff meeting, annual company party, etc.)
- assist with hiring new instructors (reviewing resumes, interview scheduling, paperwork, etc.)
- perform other clerical or administrative tasks, as required.
- organize and maintain a neat work environment
- establish and maintain an orderly filing and paper flow system
- make collection calls as needed
- recognize instructors birthdays with birthday cards and gift cards.
Marketing
- offer consultation appointments over the phone and to walk-in customers using a memorized script
- make follow up calls to potential students
- maintain school blog, write articles and solicit articles from school staff
- create monthly newsletter
- create signs for retail and school events
- assist in creating, organizing and carrying out promotional events and related activities.
Personal Assistant to the Owner
- appointment scheduling
- making travel arrangements as needed
- facilitate communication between teaching staff and owner
- assist in organizing concerts as needed
- editing and delivering correspondence and articles
Customer Service/Retail Sales
- greet customers, answer phones, collect payments, enter data, etc.
- open and close retail store/front desk at scheduled hours
- assist customers by renting and selling instruments and selling musical accessories and books.
- assist in ordering inventory weekly
- assist in maintaining inventory and retail displays (unpacking, pricing, displaying, etc.)
Desired Qualifications, Experience & Character Traits
While we are not set on a particular set of qualifications, the successful candidate will likely have a mix of the following:
- You have significant customer service experience….all the better if it is in a retail or school setting.
- You have great organizational skills, communication skills and can prioritizing and handle several activities at once
- You have at least some college education (degree desired)
- You are computer savvy and are experienced with MS Office, the Internet and POP software.
- People-oriented, friendly, respectful, flexible, cooperative, and supportive
- Must be a quick learner and detail-oriented
- Results-oriented, with a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellent customer service
- Honest and dependable (both in punctuality and completion of work assignments)
- Able to perform well under occasional pressure in a fast-paced work environment
- Available to work full time including Saturdays, weekday afternoons, and evenings.
- Scheduled hours: 10:30am – 7:30pm M,W,Th & F; 10:30am – 4:30pm Sat.
- Likely starting pay will be between $15 – $20/hr. depending on experience
- You likely love music and believe that it is a fundamental and vital experience. You may play an instrument yourself.
