How to Teach at Starland and Sample Day

Here’s a quick guide on how to teach your lessons at Starland, and an included sample day. Please reach out to Aimee with ‌questions you may have.

The “Key Three” (and some tips)

Gusto (App or Online)

Done Daily

Log hours on here. Your hours start at the beginning of the first student’s lesson, and end at the end of the last student. (Even if there are gaps)

Tips:

  • Entering hours on the “Gusto Wallet” app is easier than online
  • If you have a planned unpaid lunch break, be sure to clock out for that time
  • For sick pay, you need to request it in Gusto. Do NOT add hours and leave a note saying “sick”
  • You must enter all hours  at the end of your work day

TeacherZone (App or Online)

Done Daily

Take daily attendance here, and message students if need be. As soon as a student comes, mark them “attended”. If they didn’t show up, mark them “no show” then create their virtual makeup lesson. If they notified you of their absence, mark them “student canceled” then create their makeup.

Tips:

  • Taking attendance is easiest in the TZ Teacher App
  • Attendance needs to be taken during the student’s lesson.
  • All schedule changes on your end (i.e. you can’t come in) need to be communicated with Aimee first. Do not reach out to the students via TZ or email without checking in.

LessonMate (On Google Chrome)

Done When Needed

If a student is absent, you create a virtual makeup for them using LessonMate. The virtual makeup MUST be created during the student’s normal lesson time. You will create a customized video and send them appropriate material to work on over the week.

Tips:

  • This is the ONLY way we handle student absences. No live makeups.
  • You will always teach a student during the time they pay for- either in person, online (Zoom), or through a virtual makeup (LessonMate).
  • Each virtual makeup will have 4 elements: 1) a recap of the last lesson, 2) new information, 3) a clear assignment for the week, and 4) a personalized video

Sample Teaching Day

3pm: Jazzy - Jazzy comes in, you mark attendance on TZ as “attended”. Teach the lesson, on to the next!

3:30pm: Ben - Ben’s attendance is already marked “student canceled”. This means they called the front team and canceled, or canceled themselves. You create a LessonMate for him and send it off.

4pm: Spot Empty - No student here for now. Still stay clocked in - you're being paid the non-teaching rate for this half hour. *great time to do some lesson prep!

4:30pm: Sarah - It's 4:35pm and Sarah hasn't shown up yet. You head up front and ask a team member to call and check in. They say they're on their way and will be there soon. Sarah comes at 4:45pm. You teach a 15 minute the lesson up until 5pm (their normal end time)

5pm: 10-Min Paid Break (stay clocked in)

5:10pm: Chosen Lunch Break - Agreed upon lunch break. Clock out 5:10pm-5:40pm

5:40pm: Tyson - It's 5:45pm and Tyson hasn't come yet. Front team reaches out, but no answer. You wait another 5 min, until 5:50pm. Haven't heard back and Tyson hasn't shown up. You mark his attendance as "No Show" in Teacher Zone. He is sent an automatic text check in. No LessonMate since he was no show. Stay clocked in until the end of the normal lesson time (6:10pm).

Hours logged on Gusto: 3-5:10pm, 5:40pm-6:10pm
